Representative Phil Gingrey (R-GA) told Roll Call Tuesday evening that Republicans were “absolutely” prepared to lose the House of Representatives in order to win their budget battle that has shut down the government.

Gingrey accused the Obama administration “missing the determination of the Republican Party.”

“I mean, they seem to think that we will miss this opportunity for a Braveheart moment to do the right thing for the American people and that we’ll back down for fear of losing the House and not gaining control of the Senate,” Gingrey said.

Gingrey’s comments come after at least one poll showing that if the 2014 congressional election were held today, the Democrats would retake the majority in the House, and after unanimous polls showing Republicans taking the lion’s share of the blame for the government shutdown.

Several other lawmakers expressed confidence to Roll Call that the GOP would be victorious in gaining concessions from the budget stalemate, but Gingrey was the only member to go so far as to say they’d be willing to sacrifice their House majority to do so.
