Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) may be in danger of going the way of his predecessor.
The conservative-leaning Washington Examiner is suggesting that if Johnson goes through with a compromise spending deal negotiated with congressional Democrats, he could be ousted in the same manner that Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was.
“After an initial honeymoon period following his election as House speaker amid the chaos of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s removal, many House Republicans are beginning to sour on Johnson. Conservative members of the House have indicated that cutting a budget deal with Democrats, the same thing that resulted in McCarthy’s removal, could be grounds to remove Johnson as well,” reads the introduction to the Examiner article, which cites the comments of Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Chip Roy (R-TX), and Eli Crane (R-AZ) as well as the anonymous comments made to Punchbowl News about a “growing feeling” within the caucus “that he’s in way, way over his head.”
“As much as there was valid criticism and frustration with Kevin, Mike is struggling to grow into the job and is just getting rolled even more than McCarthy did,” one representative told Punchbowl.
Johnson emerged from the ashes of McCarthy’s speakership in late October after three other potential, more prominent, replacements, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Steve Scalise (R-LA), and Tom Emmer (R-MN) all flamed out.
McCarthy was ousted by eight Republican rebels angered by a deal he cut with Democrats to continue funding the government back in the fall.
Johnson has also come under fire from the far reaches of the right.
Last month, former Trump White House chief strategist Steve Bannon tore into Johnson over his support for a version of the National Defense Authorization Act.
“The NDAA just passed, it just passed. This is Mike Johnson, and don’t tell me you’re a Christian. I don’t want to hear you’re a Christian, don’t wear your faith, don’t give me the Bible, I don’t hear more Bible verse. When you’ve allowed the transgender, you’ve allowed all that garbage, all that demonic trash throughout the defense budget,” railed Bannon. “You’re playing footsie with Mitch McConnell, [Chuck] Schumer, and you’re just as bad as the bad guys because you should know better. So I don’t need to hear any more biblical view, okay?”
